Animal Health Technicians also known as Veterinary paraprofessionals (VPP) provide first line animal health service in South Africa. However, regulation on the specific tasks and roles to be executed by the VPPs is still a subject invoking discussion among various stakeholders.

AVTA as well as South Africa’s National VPP associations were among the stakeholders invited in the workshop. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) organized a Public and Private Multi-Stakeholder Platform (MSP) workshop on the 4th of December 2023 at Kopanong Conference Centre in Benoni, Johannesburg.

The MSP workshop presented a chance for Veterinary Statutory Body, Chief Veterinary Officers, State-owned entities, academia, private sector, professional groups, pharmaceutical companies, etc. to discuss the possible areas of collaboration and opportunities for the AHTs in the private and public sector since amongst Africa’s main economic activity is Animal rearing.
